Several years ago, I was challenged by an elderly woman in our church to read and seek understanding to a Bible verse that I had heard and read many times: Psalm 37: 4. This verse speaks of truly knowing the Lord, and when you do; He will give you the desires of your heart.
I took on her challenge. I read and re-read this verse.
“Delight yourself also in the Lord,
and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”Psalm 37:4 NKJV
How do I get the desires of my heart?
As I read this verse, it seemed as if my heart’s desires would be fulfilled by knowing the Lord. This is how I had always envisioned this verse. Being in God’s will would offer me the reward of receiving the gifts of God: health, family, prosperity, home, daily needs, etc. Yet, in my heart, I knew that it had to be more than this. I knew that God wasn’t a genie in a bottle just waiting for me to make a wish.
So now what? How do I get the desires of my heart?
I continued to read the verse, but this time I asked God to speak. I wanted Him to show me the meaning of this verse and how I get the desires of my heart. Then, I began to see what I had missed; the key word in this verse “He”. He, God, would give me the desires of my heart. It wasn’t want I wanted or thought I wanted, but rather it was what God wanted for me.
Where do my desires come from?
Now, I read and understand this verse quite differently. I realize that when I search for God and delight in Him, He will place into my heart the desires that He has for me. He knows what is best. I want His perfect plan for my life. I want what He desires for me. His desires have become my desires.
Praying for my kids:
Now when I pray for my family, especially when I pray for my kids and grand kids; I ask God to place in them His desires. I want them to understand this verse well, to see God’s desires for their heart. I want the best for them and that means God’s best for them. His ways are perfect.
Thank you, Lord, for gaining new insight into who you are and want to be in my life. May you give my family the desires of their heart. Place inside them your perfect plan and may they desire to see how you will use them for your glory. Amen
